Site AI Settings
Control AI features at the site level to tailor capabilities for each collaboration space. Site AI settings allow you to enable or disable specific AI features per site, giving you granular control over AI capabilities across different collaboration spaces. Site AI settings require that the account owner has enabled AI under Settings > AI.
Prerequisites
Before configuring site-level AI settings:
- Account-Level AI: AI features must be enabled at the account level
- Navigate to Settings > AI
- Enable the AI features you want to use
- Save account settings
- Site Access: You must have admin or editor permissions on the site
- Organization Policies: If you're part of an organization, verify that AI features are permitted by organization policies
Accessing Site AI Settings
Navigate to Site Settings > AI to configure site-level AI features.
AI Settings: The Site AI Settings page provides toggles for each AI feature.
Available AI Features
Enable AI Chat
Enable AI Chat: Allow chat responses grounded in this site's content.
What It Does: When enabled, AI Chat can answer questions based on documents in this site. The AI uses indexed content from the site to provide relevant, context-aware responses.
Requirements:
- Account-level AI Chat must be enabled
- Content must be indexed (see Content Indexing)
- Site must have searchable content
Use Cases:
- Answer questions about site documents
- Get insights from site content
- Find information across multiple documents
- Generate content based on site documents
When to Enable: Enable AI Chat for sites where users need to ask questions about content or get AI assistance with documents.
AI Document Summaries
AI Document Summaries: Generate summary tabs for supported files in this site.
What It Does: When enabled, AI automatically generates summary tabs for supported files. Summaries provide quick overviews of document content without reading the entire document.
Requirements:
- Account-level AI features must be enabled
- Content must be indexed
- File formats must support text extraction
Use Cases:
- Quick document overviews
- Content understanding
- Document scanning
- Time-saving summaries
When to Enable: Enable AI Document Summaries for sites where users benefit from quick document overviews.
Processing: Summaries are generated in the background and may take time to appear, especially for large documents.
AI Enhanced Search
AI Enhanced Search: Improve discovery within this site using embeddings.
What It Does: When enabled, search uses AI embeddings to understand content meaning and context, providing better search results even when exact keywords don't match.
Requirements:
- Account-level AI Enhanced Search must be enabled
- Content must be indexed
- AI Enhanced Search must be enabled at account level
Use Cases:
- Semantic search
- Finding related content
- Context-aware search
- Improved search accuracy
When to Enable: Enable AI Enhanced Search for sites where users need to find content by meaning, not just keywords.
Benefits:
- Better search results
- Semantic understanding
- Context-aware results
- Improved content discovery
MCP Access
MCP Access: Permit Model Context Protocol access if your organization uses MCP tools.
What It Does: When enabled, allows external AI applications using Model Context Protocol (MCP) to access and interact with site content through secure, standardized protocols.
Requirements:
- Account-level AI features must be enabled
- Organization must use MCP tools
- MCP must be enabled at organization level (if applicable)
Use Cases:
- External AI application integration
- MCP-compatible tool access
- Programmatic AI access
- Advanced AI workflows
When to Enable: Enable MCP Access for sites that need to be accessible to external AI applications using MCP.
Security: MCP Access uses secure authentication and permission controls. See Model Context Protocol for details.
Configuring Site AI Settings
Enabling Features
- Navigate to Site Settings > AI
- Toggle on the AI features you want to enable
- Click Save to apply changes
Note: Features can only be enabled if they're enabled at the account level. Site settings can disable account-level features but cannot enable features disabled at the account level.
Disabling Features
- Navigate to Site Settings > AI
- Toggle off the AI features you want to disable
- Click Save to apply changes
Effect: Disabled features are immediately unavailable for the site, even if enabled at the account level.
Settings Application
Immediate Effect
Settings Changes: Most settings take effect immediately when saved
Feature Availability: Enabled features become available right away
User Access: Users with appropriate permissions can use enabled features immediately
Background Processing
Summaries: AI Document Summaries are generated in the background and may take time to appear
Indexing: Content indexing happens in the background and may take time to complete
Embeddings: AI Enhanced Search embeddings are created in the background
Patience: Allow time for background processing, especially for large sites or many documents
Site-Level vs Account-Level Settings
Relationship
Account Level: Provides the foundation - features must be enabled at account level first
Site Level: Provides granular control - can disable account-level features per site
Restriction Only: Site settings can only restrict features enabled at account level
Example Scenarios
Account Enables, Site Enables:
- Account Setting: AI Chat enabled
- Site Setting: AI Chat enabled
- Result: ✅ AI Chat available for this site
Account Enables, Site Disables:
- Account Setting: AI Chat enabled
- Site Setting: AI Chat disabled
- Result: ❌ AI Chat not available for this site (even though enabled at account level)
Account Disables, Site Tries to Enable:
- Account Setting: AI Chat disabled
- Site Setting: Cannot enable AI Chat
- Result: ❌ AI Chat not available (cannot enable at site level if disabled at account level)
Organization Policy Impact
Policy Control
If you're part of an organization, organization policies may control AI features:
Policy Indicators: Visual indicators show when organization policies affect AI settings
Policy Override: Organization policies may override account and site settings
Compliance: Site settings must comply with organization policies
See Organization Policies Detailed for more information.
Best Practices
Selective Enablement
Per-Site Needs: Enable AI features based on each site's specific needs
Not All Sites: Not all sites need all AI features - enable only what's needed
Performance: Disabling unused features can optimize performance
User Communication
Feature Availability: Inform site members about available AI features
Usage Guidelines: Provide guidelines on how to use AI features effectively
Expectations: Set expectations about AI feature capabilities and limitations
Regular Review
Usage Monitoring: Monitor which AI features are actually being used
Settings Review: Periodically review site AI settings to ensure they match current needs
Optimization: Adjust settings based on usage patterns and feedback
Troubleshooting
