# Site Numbering

Apply hierarchical numbering to folders and documents to improve navigation and presentation during reviews. Site numbering provides professional document organization and makes it easier to reference specific items in your site.

## Configure Numbering

From a Site > Settings > Numbering:

1. Navigate to **Site Settings > Numbering** (or **Site Settings > Display**)
2. Select a numbering format from the dropdown menu
3. Click **Save Site Numbering Settings** to apply numbering across the site

**Number Format**: Choose from predefined numbering formats that apply hierarchical numbering to all documents and folders in the site.

## Available Numbering Formats

Clear Ideas provides several predefined numbering formats to suit different document organization needs:

### No Numbering

**No Numbering**: No numbering will be displayed. This is the default option.

**Use Case**: When you don't need hierarchical numbering or want to disable numbering temporarily.

### Decimal Style - 1.1.1.1.1.1

**Decimal Style**: Each level is numbered with a decimal point.

**Example**:
- Level 1: `1.`
- Level 2: `1.1.`
- Level 3: `1.1.1.`

**Use Case**: Standard hierarchical numbering for technical documents, reports, and structured content.

### Legal Style - 1.(a).(i).(A).(1).(a)

**Legal Style**: Each level uses a different numbering style with parentheses.

**Example**:
- Level 1: `1.`
- Level 2: `(a)`
- Level 3: `(i)`
- Level 4: `(A)`
- Level 5: `(1)`
- Level 6: `(a)`

**Use Case**: Legal documents, contracts, and formal documents requiring traditional legal numbering.

### Mixed Alphanumeric - 1.a.i.A.(1).(a)

**Mixed Alphanumeric**: Each level alternates between numeric, lowercase, uppercase, and parenthetical styles.

**Example**:
- Level 1: `1.`
- Level 2: `a.`
- Level 3: `i.`
- Level 4: `A.`
- Level 5: `(1)`
- Level 6: `(a)`

**Use Case**: Academic papers, research documents, and content requiring varied numbering styles.

### Full Alphabetic Lowercase - a.b.c.d.e.f

**Full Alphabetic Lowercase**: Each level is numbered with a lowercase letter.

**Example**:
- Level 1: `a.`
- Level 2: `b.`
- Level 3: `c.`

**Use Case**: Simple alphabetical organization, appendices, and supplementary materials.

### Roman Numerals with Alphabetic - I.A.1.a.i.(I)

**Roman Numerals with Alphabetic**: Combines Roman numerals, uppercase letters, numbers, lowercase letters, and parenthetical styles.

**Example**:
- Level 1: `I.`
- Level 2: `A.`
- Level 3: `1.`
- Level 4: `a.`
- Level 5: `i.`
- Level 6: `(I)`

**Use Case**: Formal documents, book chapters, and content requiring classical numbering styles.

### Alphanumeric with Parentheses - 1)a)i)A)(1)(a)

**Alphanumeric with Parentheses**: Each level uses different styles with closing parentheses.

**Example**:
- Level 1: `1)`
- Level 2: `a)`
- Level 3: `i)`
- Level 4: `A)`
- Level 5: `(1)`
- Level 6: `(a)`

**Use Case**: Outlines, lists, and documents requiring parenthetical numbering.

## How Numbering Works

### Hierarchical Application

Numbering is applied hierarchically based on folder structure:

- **Top Level**: Items at the site root use the first level numbering style
- **Nested Levels**: Items in subfolders use progressively deeper numbering styles
- **Automatic**: Numbering is calculated automatically based on item position and folder depth

### Visual Display

Numbering appears:

- **In Lists**: Next to file and folder names in list view
- **In Tiles**: On tile cards in tile view
- **In Exports**: Included in exported site indexes and documentation
- **In Navigation**: Visible in breadcrumbs and navigation menus

### File Names Unchanged

**Important**: Numbering affects how items render in the UI and exported indexes. It does not modify underlying filenames. Your original file names remain unchanged.

## Best Practices

### Enable After Organization

> **Tip: Enable post‑organization**: Turn on numbering after you've uploaded and arranged content. Use Tile View drag‑and‑drop to set the default order before numbering.

**Why**: Numbering is based on the current order of items. Organize your content first, then enable numbering to ensure proper sequence.

### Choose Appropriate Format

**Document Type**: Select numbering formats that match your document type:
- Technical documents: Decimal Style
- Legal documents: Legal Style
- Academic papers: Mixed Alphanumeric
- Simple lists: Full Alphabetic Lowercase

**Audience**: Consider what numbering style your audience expects and understands.

### Consistent Application

**Site-Wide**: Numbering applies to all items in the site. Ensure consistency across all folders and documents.

**Review**: Review numbered content to ensure the format works well with your content structure.

## Changing Numbering

### Updating Format

To change the numbering format:

1. Navigate to **Site Settings > Numbering**
2. Select a new format from the dropdown
3. Click **Save Site Numbering Settings**

**Effect**: The new format is applied immediately to all items in the site.

### Disabling Numbering

To disable numbering:

1. Navigate to **Site Settings > Numbering**
2. Select **No Numbering** from the dropdown
3. Click **Save Site Numbering Settings**

**Effect**: All numbering is removed from the site display.

## Limitations

### Order Dependency

Numbering is based on the current order of items. If you reorder items, numbering updates automatically.

### Format Presets

Only predefined numbering formats are available. Custom numbering formats are not currently supported.

### Export Behavior

Numbering appears in exported indexes but does not modify actual file names in exports.
